Description
This first volume of the Field Gemology Travelogues series documents the development of ruby mining in Greenland, following the Aappaluttoq deposit from the start of commercial production in May 2017 through its closure in November 2022.
Field gemologist Vincent Pardieu closely monitored the project, completing eleven expeditions during its operational years. Drawing on field notes, photographs, and first-hand accounts, the book presents a detailed record of this modern ruby source.
Contributors include key figures involved in the mine’s construction, geological research, ruby treatment and cutting, international marketing, and jewelry design — including the creation of a notable brooch inspired by traditional Greenlandic dress and developed in collaboration with Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
Richly illustrated and based on direct field experience, this volume offers an in-depth look at a recent chapter in contemporary gemmology.
